The US is imposing financial sanctions on ten companies that it believes are owned or controlled by the Burmese junta.

They are: Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (UMEH), the Myanmar Economic Corporation, Myanmar Ruby Enterprise, Myanmar Imperial Jade Company Ltd., Myawaddy Trading Ltd., Myawaddy Bank Ltd., No. 1 Mining Enterprise, No. 2 Mining Enterprise, No. 3 Mining Enterprise, and The Cooperative Import Export Enterprise,

Any US assets of the companies are to be frozen and Americans are prohibited from doing business with them.

The move follows President Bush’s signing of the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE (Junta’s Anti-Democratic Efforts) Act of 2008. The legislation is aimed at extending sanctions against the junta’s senior leaders.
