Long suffering

In church this morning, someone reminded me of the story of Adoniram Judson, who helped form the American Baptist Missionary Union and more importantly in this part of the world is widely recognised as the first missionary to bring the Gospel to Burma.

He and his wife Ann, left the US in 1812 and after being refused entry to India arrived in Burma.
He is said to have mastered the Burmese language and translated the Bible into Burmese. But, it was not until 1819, six years after his arrival that he won his first convert!
Six years!!!
He also brought the Gospel to the Karen people. His first Karen convert was Ko Tha Byu, a reputed murderer, who was sent off into the jungle to preach to his fellow Karen.
Sometime after Judson’s death in 1850, a government survey recorded 210,000 Christians, or one in every 58 Burmans.
I’ve been in Mae Sot for about 20 months now and while I’ve had some successes, there have also been many occasions that have left me feeling frustrated. Could I survive six years of frustration without any tangible sign of progress?

Not to take away from the story but to add to it. It was actually seven years even more amazing.
