China has closed some ferry crossings on the Mao-Shweli river, that forms part of the border with Burma as well as reinforcing security forces say sources quoted by the Shan Herald Agency for News (SHAN).
The border is frequently crossed by traders, who go back and forth. However, residents say since mid-July hundreds of People’s Liberation Army troops have been dispatched to the border.
China and Burma share a 2,185 km border.
According to one Shan businessman in Tachilek, opposite Thailand’s Maesai, anyone caught is being detained for the duration of the Olympics. He said, “The border trade has practically come to a standstill.”
The Olympics are due to open in Beijing on August 8 and last until August 24.
