Zarganar
Popular Burmese comedian Zarganar and sports writer Zaw Thet Htway have appeared in court for the first time since their arrests reports the Democratic Voice of Burma.
Both men were arrested in June while providing aid to victims of Cyclone Nargis. They were amongst many ordinary Burmese that began ferrying aid to the disaster zone in the face of the junta’s indifference. As news of their activities spread, the security forces began to crack down on these grassroots efforts.
Numerous check points were put up and anyone travelling to the Irrawaddy Delta was ordered to turn back.
The two men were charged with inciting offences against the state or causing public alarm, which carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.
According to witnesses at the hearing, the pair’s next hearing will be on August 7. Their families said they had not been informed of any court hearings. Zarganar and Zaw Thet Htway were arrested on June 4 and 13 respectively.
