Out come the big guns

Two of Hollywood’s A-list have spoken out against the Burmese junta. George Clooney and Brad Pitt have launched a campaign through their pressure group, Not On Our Watch, calling on Burma’s neighbours to put pressure on the regime to stop blocking international relief efforts.

The group has taken out a full page advertisement in The Jakarta Post, that is also signed by former Philippine president Corazon Aquino, East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi and former Czech president Vaclav Havel.

The advert says, “We support full and immediate access for international relief agencies. Emergency food, medicine and lifesaving supplies must not be delayed any longer.”

The full advertisement can be found here.

Not On Our Watch has previously focused on the humanitarian situation in Darfur, with Clooney visiting the region himself. He later addressed the UN Security Council calling for action on Darfur. He has also met with Chinese officials to press Beijing to stop its support of Sudan.

After the release of several recent celebrity videos focusing on Burma, it’s good to see someone calling for real action rather than bemoaning the situation and suggesting the best way to respond is to sign up with a particular organisation.
