You can call me Al

The Reverend Al Sharpton recently took part in a public debate with Christopher Hitchens, a journalist and author of the book, ‘God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything’. The subject, under discussion was ‘Is God great

While Hitchens pointed to the actions of religious fundamentalists to discredit religion, Sharpton dismissed his arguments with the following:

“We are sitting in a room that because of lights, we assume that there is electricity in the building. Electricity can light the room or burn it down; it does not mean electricity does not exist because it burns a building down, or that it is inherently wicked. Clearly people have misused God, as they have misused other things that are possibly positive, but its existence is not in any way proved or disproved by you giving me a long diatribe on those that have mishandled and misused God.”

In three sentences, Sharpton manages to explain the existence of God without having to resort to apologetics and without taking anything away from the power of scripture. In contrast, there have been times when I’ve caught myself rambling, while preaching or when just sharing the Good News to someone.

What an amazing gift it is to be able to be able to communicate the nature of God in such a way that people can walk away feeling as if they have a closer relationship with God simply by knowing him better.

At CNN, we were taught to reduce even the most complex news story to the bare bones in order to fit it into the very limited amount of time available.

However, the nature of God goes beyond a simple, who, what, where, when, type summary. And, then, just when you think you understand Him, He surprises you and the answer to your prayers appears from an unexpected source.

God is great. I just pray that I can help other people see this simple truth.
